YETI Rambler Insulated Water Bottle Review
When you think knee surgery recovery, a water bottle isn't often at the forefront of your mind.
However from the time you're actually faced with limited mobility, it's one of the first things you will need. Keeping hydrated not only helps you heal, it's essential to just about every bodily function. That's the simple reason why you can go much longer without food than you can without water.
So you're thinking: "ok water is important, I get it ... but what should I look for in a water bottle?"
For one, you'll need something that will stand up against knocks, drops and bumps. You'd be surprised how reaching for something at the awkward angles caused by having a heavily bandaged knee, often leads to knocking it over. So glass bottles are out. Stainless steel bottles are the best and ideally, those with a very secure, screw down cover.
Next up is water capacity. Now this will vary person to person - there's a weight to capacity trade off and everyone has a different sweet spot when it comes to a bottle that holds enough water but isn't too heavy. The Yeti Rambler comes in 18 oz, 36 oz and 64 oz sizes. I'd recommend the 36 oz bottle. If you're supposed to drink 8 glasses a day that's half a day's worth right there and isn't too heavy, even when full.
Lastly is insulation. Why does insulation matter? Because if you want to have half a day's supply of water within reach, it's good to have a bottle that can maintain it at the temperature you prefer. Only a quality insulated bottle can provide this.
There are many brands of bottles out there that check all the above, but the YETI brand stands above most of them. YETI's vacuum insulated bottles are made for the most rugged activities such as hiking, hunting, camping and watersports. Vacuum insulated bottles are notoriously susceptible to drops, which can damage the fragile lining that maintains the insulating vacuum. YETI bottles are made with durable 18/8 stainless steel and engineered to withstand rough treatment. This bottle will keep your water cold (or hot) in spite of how you treat it.
Other features of the YETI Rambler line that I love are the secure, airtight cap and the wide mouth. The Triplehaul cap is big and sturdy and has the added advantage of doubling as a handle. Wide enough to accommodate three fingers, you can hold on to this bottle very securely when it's full and at it's heaviest. The wide mouth is another great feature. If you're new to the water bottle world, do yourself a favor and get a wide mouth bottle. It's easier to fill, easier to empty and so much easier to clean.
So in summary ...
What's good: extremely durable thanks to YETI's 'over-engineering', sturdy cap that doubles as a handle, wide mouth design.
What's not: Absolutely nothing (I have two of these, which I use everyday, and can't think of a single thing to put here).
YETI is known for high quality, rugged products and the Rambler insulated bottles are in line with what you'd expect from the brand. The Rambler comes in three sizes, 18 oz, 36 oz and 64 oz and all have unsurpassed build quality, a secure and sturdy cap, as well as a wide mouth design. The 36 oz size I found to be the perfect mix of carrying capacity without too much bulk or weight.
