DonJoy Lateral J Patella Knee Brace Review
To say patella subluxation and dislocation are no fun, is the understatement of the century. Sadly, patella instability is very prevalent and the condition often necessitates use of a stabilizing brace. There are many excellent options out there, but for lateral instability the DonJoy Lateral J Patella is hard to beat.
This knee brace has a J-shaped buttress on the lateral side of the patella opening. This buttress serves to prevent patella movement and it does so quite comfortably. This brace, once sized correctly, fits extremely well and I love that it comes in Drytex and neoprene options. I've used the Drytex brace, which has better airflow than neoprene while still providing support and compression. If you want to swim in your brace, live in a warm climate or have neoprene allergies, Drytex is the material for you.
Built for everyday use, this brace not only fits comfortably but also allows for great range of motion - something many bulky knee braces won't allow. Speaking of bulk, this is not a low profile brace. It will not fit under a snug pants so be wary of this.
There have been reports of the stitching on this brace coming apart but after 5 months of mostly everyday use, it's still in great shape and hasn't deteriorated at all.
So in summary ...
What's good: excellent lateral patella stabilization, great fit (once sized properly), Drytex material is a great alternative to neoprene.
What's not: it's a bit bulky.
DonJoy is an industry leader in knee support braces. This Lateral J brace reflects the DonJoy brand's attention to detail and quality. This well fitting brace provides all the stabilization that someone with lateral patella instability could need. The Drytex option provides a more comfortable and breathable material, greatly enhancing the ability to wear this brace comfortably every day. While it's not the bulkiest brace ever, it certainly isn't low profile which makes it impossible to wear under snug pants.
